2016 has started badly for our country as far as terrorism is concerned. On the very first day of the year, Pathankot Airbase in Punjab witnessed an unprecedented terrorist attack which continues even now. Targeting the airbase the very first day of the year, terrorists have repeated the history after 15 years. On 1st January 2001 the terrorists had attacked on the firing range of Damtal about four kilometer away from Pathankot airbase from the opposite direction and killed three soldiers. In this attempt terrorists came from Damtal hills. They were hiding there for many days. The attack on Pathankot airbase on Saturday was not entirely unexpected. Security forces had been expecting a terror strike. Sadly despite prior warning they failed to prevent it. Undoubtedly the terrorists had very strong motivation but were [thank God] prevented so that they could not cause damage and destruction of our assets at the Airbase. In this sense our brave soldiers foiled their plans. However , it is shocking that four-five armed terrorists wearing army uniform were successful in kidnapping the SP of Gurdaspur and his two companions on Thursday. The kidnappers were not only successful in kidnapping[?] the SP but also got hold of the blue light police vehicle. They crossed all the police barriers through this vehicle and reached the Pathankot airbase without any check. The question arises here that despite knowing that a government police vehicle has been stolen why they were not intercepted anywhere? The second question arises as to that why did the terrorists with motivations of carnage leave alive the SP and his companion? It smells of some kind of collusion somewhere. The terrorists attacking Pathankot base had infiltrated into India from Narot Jaimal area after being trained from Bahawalpur in Pakistan. All these had reached near village Koliya Ajje via Baniyal and Khadkada Dhudhowal from the international border. First the terrorists killed Ikagar Singh and snatched his Innova car here on 31st December’s night. The car met with an accident after having a puncture on the way. The terrorists left the car there and then got hold of SP Salwinder Singh’s vehicle and proceeded towards designated target. They went in the fields of Village Akalgarh behind the Air Force Station in the vehicle. Kotli is located on the Pathankot-Gurdaspur national highway. The way the terrorists wandered in the Pathankot district for two days it may be assumed that they had the full information about the important roads and connecting bye lanes of the entire area. Since it has now been established that they came across using the infamous drug trail, it is speculated that they were given shelter and protection by Indian drug smugglers. Located just 40 kms away from the Pakistan border, the Pathankot airbase has already been the eyesore of Pakistan and Pak supported terrorists. Our fighter planes had flew from this airbase in the war of 1971 and caused the spinal break to Pakistan and Bangla Desh was born. The base had an important role in Pak Army defeat in the Kargil war also. The terrorists attacking Pathankot airbase had a motivation to cause a huge disaster there. They wanted to target fighter planes (MIG-21 Bison) and helicopters stationed there so that there be huge blasts and the entire airbase be destroyed. It may be noted that about 500 airmen’s families live at the base. Had the terrorists succeeded in their intentions the aviation petrol in huge quantity in the fighter planes could have acted as a volcano and there is no need to explain the consequences. They had also planned to keep some persons hostage at the base. The Pathankot attack has emerged as a big challenge for Prime Minister’s new policy of improving relations with Pakistan. Pakistan has retorted to the Modi’s eight day old Lahore visit. It is important to see that what strategy does Modi follow now? The attack cannot be accessed lesser than the attack on Parliament. In my opinion it is an act of WAR against India. For the first time these Pak supported terrorists (Jaish-e-Mohammed) have attacked a military establishment of India. It is almost clear that whenever a positive progress is noticed in the relations of India and Pakistan, the terrorist sects or radical elements or ISI in Pakistan give such negative response. India will have to respond to this attack. Bullets and rockets can’t be responded with roses and a cup of tea. It appears that the terrorist were more in numbers than the earlier estimates. They were divided into two groups and both succeeded in entering the base. Our brave soldiers have paid a heavy price to foil the nefarious designs of these terrorists. Seven soldiers of security forces including a Lieutenant Colonel of NSG have become martyrs in this attack. We pay our homage to these brave martyrs who didn’t care for their lives while on duty. JAI HIND!
