Pakistan’s Existence in Danger

Anil Narendra
Pakistan’s very existence has now become a big question mark. Taliban has said that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal is no longer their target. Taliban’s target, now is not only to capture the nuclear bombs but also Pakistan. As we all are aware after the death of Osama Bin Laden, Taliban has un-leashed the campaign of terrorists in Pakistan. Taliban’s spokesman Ahsaan Ullah had the guts to say that our objective is now to capture power in Pakistan. A reporter of the Wall Street Journal spoke to Ahsaan over phone wherein Ahsaan told him that Pakistan is the only Muslim Country which has the atomic bomb and hence we want to capture it.
Taliban’s threat cannot be taken lightly. Few days back when the Naval Base Mehran was attacked by a handful of Al-Qaeda militants, they were successful in their objective to a very large extent. This was also because a section of the Pakistani military sympathizers of Al-Qaeda provided these militants with vital information of the airbase. The place where the Al-Qaeda militants struck was hardly 24 km away from the Nuclear Arsenal Depot. P.N.S. Mehran is one of the most important and well guarded naval airbases of Pakistan. Without the active support of a section of the Pakistani Army and Defense Establishment, success in this attack could not be guaranteed. The way these militants fought for hours with the Pakistani commandos goes to prove that not only were they fully equipped for the job but were well armed with prior strategic information about the base.
There is virtually a civil war kind of situation going on in Pakistan today and in these circumstances we can not afford to talk the Taliban’s threat lightly. I can not imagine the catastrophic situation wherein Taliban succeeds in their attempt. Behind the facade of political leadership the real force is the Pakistan’s army and the way Al-Qaeda and Taliban element are succeeding in their strike day after day proves that even the Pakistan Army is unable to contain these terrorists elements. The writ of the Government of Asif Ali Zardari and Yusuf Raza Gilani hardly extends beyond the metros of Pakistan. The situation is so grave that even Indian Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh who is well known for his peaceful co-existence thesis is now asking for caution vis-à-vis Pakistan. India cannot prevent the Talibani’s from taking over Pakistan but the United States is definitely in a position to do so. The US can ensure that Al-Qaeda and Taliban do not succeed in their extremely dangerous plan. The least the Americans can do for the time being is to take control of this nuclear arsenal of Pakistan. This will at least prevent a very grave danger, the rest can be looked into later on.
