NUCLEAR DEAL BETWEEN IRAN AND SUPER POWERS

The world felt a sigh of relief with Iran and the mighty western countries striking a deal on Iran’s nuclear issue which continued to be a cause of tension for the last 13 years or so. The contention arose after the leakage of information on uranium enrichment beyond permitted limit from Iran’s nuclear plant at Natanz in 2002. During eight day long talks in Switzerland a road map of the deal on Iran’s contentious issue was agreed upon.  The talks on Iran Nuclear issue have reached close to a successful conclusion. A final agreement between P 5+1 member nations and Iran has since been emerged. The Foreign Ministers of the member nations met at Lausanne city in Switzerland on Sunday.  The five permanent members of the UN security Council- America, Russia, China, France & England and Germany were the one party and Iran herself was the other party in the talks.  After intense negotiations of many days Iran and USA along with other five super powers made this announcement.  A comprehensive nuclear deal is to be finalised before 30th June 2015. The expected comprehensive deal will stress upon restricting Iran’s nuclear programme and in return lifting certain international sanctions imposed on Iran.  During next ten years Iran will reduce the present quantum of centrifuge from 19 thousand to ten thousand and further to 6104 and 5600 centrifuge in a phased manner to bring down the two third of the present quantum. Iran will enrich only up to 3.67 percent of centrifuge required to generate nuclear power. As per the present capability Iran is in a position to develop the quantum of uranium required for a Nuclear Bomb within a period of three to four months but after coming in to force of the Comprehensive Deal Iran will take a year to develop the same quantity.  This arrangement would continue for the next ten years. The unutilized quantity of the centrifuge is supposed to be kept under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency- IAEA.  The IAEA will inspect all nuclear reactors of Iran at regular intervals.  All nuclear centres will remain under the supervision of the IAEA for 25 years. The economic and oil sanctions imposed by USA and European Union will be lifted in a phased manner in return, in case Iran violates the conditions the sanctions could be re imposed on her.  On sanctions being lifted Iran will be able to sell large quantity of its oil in the international market. On Iran fulfilling all nuclear commitments specified in the comprehensive deal and the same being confirmed by the IAEA all nuclear sanctions imposed against Iran will be lifted. Further all UN resolutions in force against Iran in the past will also be dumped. America from last decade had even threatened Iran of an attack due to its nuclear programme. The tension escalated during the term of the former US President, George Bush.  The former President Bush was about to attack Iran.  The conditions improved during the tenure of Barak Obama which resulted in an atmosphere conducive to the talks.  Iran expressed flexibility up to some extent to reach an agreement whereas the western countries substantially changed their stand in order to reach on a point of mutual agreement.  US President Obama stated that all ways leading to the development of nuclear weapons by Iran will stand stalled in case the agreement is implemented in its true spirit.  The fear on the success of the deal is still there as the opposition in Iran and America are out to reject it. The Republican Party has stated its commitment to disallow the passage of the legal steps required for implementation of the deal in the Congress whereas the opposition leaders in Iran have accused the government of surrendering the nuclear sovereignty of the country.  The top leadership of both the sides will have to strive hard in getting public support on the nuclear deal.  We do hope that ultimately wisdom will prevail in both the countries. A peaceful resolution of the issue is in the interest of both Iran and Western countries further it would provide a sigh of relief to rest of the world.
