ISI Chief Lt Gen Shuja Pasha’s threat to India

- Anil Narendra
After Osama bin Laden episode and Pak exposure before the world, Pakistan has been greatly agitated and every other day, it is issuing confused statements. The other day, it was Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani who threatened America in the National Assembly to stop drone attacks, otherwise NATO convoys will not be allowed to pass through his country. And now, the Chief of the notorious Pak agency, ISI, Ahmed Shuja Pasha while briefing the members of Pak Senate and National Assembly on Pak military preparedness has threatened India. He has said that if India dares to carry out any Abbotabad type attack on US lines, Pakistan will also raid Indian targets. Pasha said that all preparations in this regard have been completed. He even claimed that ISI has identified Indian targets for such raids. It has, even rehearse as to how it can destroy selected targets in India.
It cannot be denied that in the wake of Osama episode, Pak military establishment can go to any extent to divert its people’s attention and as such India will have to be on alert and state of readiness and also it should not take Pasha’s statement seriously. ISI is directly controlled by the Pak Army. After the elimination of Osama bin Laden, who had been living in Abbotabad in the vicinity of Pak Military Academy and the Headquarters of three regiments of the Pak Army, by the Navy SEALS in a secret mission, Pakistan has been the target of world’s scorn. This has raised a number of questions about its entire military and intelligence establishment. US action on the internal front of Pakistan is seen as a violation of its sovereignty. The national leadership, whether it is the President Asif Ali Zardari or even the Prime Minister, is unable to provide satisfactory answers to the people of the country. To counter this, first, efforts were made to take ISI under the control of the Internal Affairs Ministry of the civilian government, but Pak Army opposed the move, then Pasha was tried to be sidelined. Pasha had already got an inkling of this move, as such during in camera hearing before the National Assembly on May 13, he tried to assure the politicians that in case of US type action by India in the future, there will be immediate retaliatory attacks and for such attacks, Indian targets have already been identified. In fact, the Indian Chief of Staff, General VK Singh had recently said that India, too is capable of taking US type of action to destroy terrorists’ sanctuaries on the other side of the border. His statement has led to confusion in whole of the Pakistan. Not only ISI Chief, the Pakistan as a whole is confused and in this confusion it is likely to take any uncalled for action. As such, we will also have to maintain full preparedness.
